Dental Implants for Back Teeth:
Why Missing Molars Matter

Nobody can see a missing back tooth. But your jaw, your digestion, and your remaining teeth all feel its absence. Here's why replacing it is more important than you think.

The problem nobody sees (until it's too late)

Missing a front tooth gets fixed quickly because it's visible. Missing a back tooth gets ignored because it's not. But the consequences of a missing molar are often more serious than a missing front tooth.

Your molars do the heavy work of chewing. Losing even one reduces your chewing efficiency by 30%. Your remaining teeth start compensating, bearing forces they weren't designed for. Adjacent teeth shift into the gap. The opposing tooth over-erupts. Your bite changes. And the bone where the tooth used to be starts shrinking.

None of this happens overnight. It happens gradually, which is what makes it easy to ignore and expensive to fix later.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore a Missing Back Tooth

Teeth start shifting within months

When a tooth is missing, the teeth on either side lose their support and begin tilting into the gap. This changes your bite alignment and can make future dental work more complicated.

An implant fills the gap and holds everything in place. It acts as a placeholder that prevents neighbouring teeth from shifting. The longer you wait, the more likely you'll need orthodontic work to correct the movement.

The opposing tooth over-erupts

The tooth directly above (or below) the gap has nothing to bite against. Without opposition, it begins growing out of its socket, becoming longer and more exposed.

This is irreversible without treatment. An over-erupted tooth is harder to clean, more vulnerable to decay, and can cause bite problems. Replacing the missing tooth with an implant prevents this entirely.

Jaw bone deteriorates without stimulation

Tooth roots stimulate the jawbone through chewing forces. Without a root, the bone in that area begins to resorb. Up to 25% of bone width can be lost in the first year alone.

Implants are the only replacement that stimulates bone. Dentures and bridges sit above the bone without stimulating it. An implant replaces the root and prevents further loss.

Digestion and nutrition suffer

Molars are responsible for grinding food. With fewer molars, food is less thoroughly chewed, which can affect digestion and nutrient absorption.

Restoring chewing function has measurable health benefits. Research links poor chewing efficiency to digestive issues, nutritional deficiencies, and even cardiovascular risk factors. An implant restores full chewing power to the affected side.

Losing one molar reduces chewing efficiency by 30%

Your remaining teeth can't compensate for a missing molar. They'll try, which is what causes them to shift, crack, and wear down prematurely. An implant restores the chewing power that was lost.

Back Tooth Implant: What to Expect

1

Consultation and 3D scan

First visit

We assess the gap, check for shifting, measure bone density, and plan the optimal implant position. If teeth have already shifted, we'll factor that into the plan.

2

Implant placement

About 1 hour

The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. Back teeth don't require a temporary crown in most cases since they're not visible. If you prefer one, it can be provided.

3

Healing (osseointegration)

3-6 months

Back teeth bear heavy chewing forces, so we allow thorough integration. You eat normally on the other side during this period.

4

Permanent crown fitted

Final visit

A custom-made crown designed to handle molar-level forces is placed. It's shaped to restore your bite and match your natural teeth. Treatment complete.

Total estimated treatment time: 4-6 months from placement to permanent crown

Back Tooth Implants: Your Questions Answered

Is it worth replacing a missing back tooth?

Yes. Missing back teeth cause a chain reaction: adjacent teeth shift, opposing teeth over-erupt, bone deteriorates, and chewing efficiency drops significantly. What starts as one missing molar can lead to multiple dental problems. Replacing it early after extraction is simpler and cheaper than fixing the consequences later.

Can I just leave the gap if nobody can see it?

You can, but the consequences develop silently. Within months, neighbouring teeth start shifting. Within a year, bone loss is significant. Over time, your bite changes, jaw pain can develop, and remaining teeth become more vulnerable. The fact that it's invisible makes it easy to ignore, but the problems are real.

Is a back tooth implant or bridge better?

For single missing molars, an implant is usually the better long-term option. A bridge requires grinding down two healthy adjacent teeth. An implant stands alone and preserves those teeth. Implants also last longer (25+ years vs 10-15 for bridges).

How long does a back tooth implant take?

Placement takes about 1 hour. Healing is 3-6 months (back teeth bear heavy forces, so we allow thorough integration). The permanent crown is placed in a final short appointment. Total time from start to finish is typically 4-6 months.

Is a back tooth implant painful?

Most patients say it's less uncomfortable than expected. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Post-operative discomfort is typically managed with over-the-counter painkillers for 2-3 days. Sedation is available if you're nervous.

How much does a molar implant cost?

A single molar implant starts from £1,695, including the implant, abutment, and crown. For multiple missing back teeth, an implant-supported bridge is often more cost-effective. 0% finance from £28/month.
