If dentures are already frustrating you, you're not alone

Dentures have been the standard solution for missing teeth for decades. They work. But most people who wear them will tell you they come with trade-offs: food gets stuck underneath, adhesive pastes are a daily hassle, and the fit gets worse over time as your jawbone shrinks.

Dental implants solve these problems by replacing the tooth root itself. They sit in the jawbone, stimulate bone growth (instead of allowing it to shrink), and support fixed teeth that feel and function like your own.

This page compares the two options honestly. Dentures are the right choice for some people. Implants are better for others. The goal here is to give you the information you need to make the right decision for your situation. If you're weighing up a bridge vs implant instead, we have a separate guide for that.

Implants restore 95% of natural bite force. Dentures restore 25%.

This isn't just about comfort. Reduced bite force affects what you can eat, which affects nutrition. Research from the British Dental Journal shows that denture wearers consume significantly less fibre, fresh fruit, and vegetables than people with natural teeth or implants.

Switching from Dentures to Implants

What the process looks like, step by step

1

Free consultation and 3D scan

Day 1

We assess your bone levels with a 3D CBCT scan, discuss your options, and create a personalised treatment plan. You'll leave with a clear picture of costs and timelines. No obligation.

2

Treatment planning

1-2 weeks

Our team designs your new teeth digitally using the 3D scan data. If bone grafting is needed, we'll schedule that first. Many patients don't need grafting thanks to All-on-4 techniques that work with existing bone.

3

Implant placement

Surgery day

Implants are placed under local anaesthesia (or sedation if preferred). The procedure typically takes 2-3 hours for a full arch. You can wear your existing dentures during healing if needed.

4

Permanent teeth fitted

48 hours

With our Vivo Bridge system, your permanent teeth are fitted within 48 hours. No temporaries, no waiting months. For traditional implants, healing takes 3-6 months before the final restoration.

5

Enjoy your new teeth

Lifetime

Eat what you want, smile with confidence, and brush your teeth normally. No more adhesives, no more removing teeth at night. Regular check-ups keep everything in top condition.

Total estimated treatment time: As fast as 48 hours with Vivo Bridge, or 3-6 months with traditional implants

Common Worries About Switching from Dentures

"I've worn dentures for 20 years. Is it too late to switch?"

This is the question we hear most often. Long-term denture use does cause bone loss in the jaw, which can make some patients worry they've missed their window.

It's rarely too late. Modern techniques like All-on-4 use angled implants to maximise available bone. Even patients with significant bone loss often qualify. A 3D scan at your consultation will give us a definitive answer.

"Will implants feel strange after wearing dentures?"

After years of dentures, the idea of fixed teeth can feel unfamiliar. Patients often wonder whether implants will feel bulky or uncomfortable.

Most patients say implants feel more natural than dentures ever did. There's no palate coverage restricting taste, no bulk on your gums, and no movement when you chew. The adjustment period is typically a few weeks, and patients consistently describe it as a relief rather than a change.

"What happens to my old dentures during the process?"

Nobody wants to be without teeth, even temporarily. This is a genuine concern for people considering the switch.

You're never without teeth. With Vivo Bridge, you get permanent teeth within 48 hours of surgery. For traditional implants, your existing dentures can be modified to wear during the healing period. We plan around your comfort.

"I'm worried about the cost of implants vs keeping my dentures"

The upfront cost of implants is higher than a new set of dentures. That's a fact. But costs need to be compared over time, not just at the point of purchase.

Over 10 years, implants often cost the same or less. Dentures need replacing every 5-7 years, plus adhesives, relines, and repairs. Full arch implants from £6,995 with 0% finance available. Our cost guide breaks down the numbers in detail.

Dentures vs Implants: Your Questions Answered

Can I replace my dentures with dental implants?

Yes. Most denture wearers are candidates for implants, even after years of wearing dentures. Bone loss from long-term denture use can sometimes require grafting first, but techniques like All-on-4 are specifically designed for patients with reduced bone. We assess every patient individually at a free consultation.

How long does it take to switch from dentures to implants?

The timeline depends on your situation. If you're suitable for Vivo Bridge, you can have permanent teeth in 48 hours. Traditional implants take 3-6 months including healing. Either way, you're never left without teeth during the process.

Are dental implants more expensive than dentures long-term?

Dentures cost less upfront but need replacing every 5-7 years (£500-£1,200 each time), plus ongoing costs for adhesives, cleaning solutions, and relining. Over 10 years, dentures can cost £3,000-£5,000+. A full arch implant solution starts from £6,995 and can last a lifetime with proper care. Many patients find implants cost less over time.

Will I be without teeth during the implant process?

Never. If you currently wear dentures, you can continue wearing them during healing (with modifications if needed). With our Vivo Bridge system, you receive permanent fixed teeth within 48 hours of surgery. We always ensure you leave with a functioning set of teeth.

I've had dentures for 20+ years. Is it too late for implants?

It's rarely too late. Long-term denture use does cause bone loss, but modern techniques work around this. All-on-4 uses angled implants to maximise available bone. Zygomatic implants can be placed even in cases of severe bone loss. The first step is a 3D scan to assess your bone levels. See our dedicated guide on dental implants for seniors.

What's the difference between snap-in dentures and full implants?

Snap-in (implant-retained) dentures clip onto 2-4 implants but are still removable. They're more stable than regular dentures but still need adhesive and cleaning. Fixed implant teeth (like All-on-4) are permanently attached, feel like natural teeth, and are brushed and flossed normally. Fixed teeth restore significantly more bite force. Some patients also consider mini implants for denture stabilisation.

Having priced up the same implants on the South Coast I found Dental by Design a lot cheaper . I had my whole top jaw teeth replaced by Dr. Mechoui having been worried by the process I found him and the surgery excellent at making me feel relaxed and informed at all stages. The finished result has exceeded my expectations and I would thoroughly recommend Dental by design to anybody who is thinking about the process. Ps they don’t look anything like’Turkey’ teeth, very natural looking and feeling.

I visited plenty of dental practice before I came to see DBD. They all gave me the sweet talk and complications in having it done. I felt like, with all the complications, it’s not worth going through it. For every complications, there’s a corresponding charge. With DBD, everything was straight forward. On my free assessment, Dr Rob gave me lots of encouragement and reassurance. On the day of my procedure, nurse Elisa and Dr Rob made me feel at home and the feeling of outmost care. The receptionist were all very nice and they new my name as I entered the door. Isabella was so caring even with the aftercare calls. Overall, my experience with them has been well worth it in terms of affordability, skills, quality of care and the friendly and clean atmosphere. I will definitely spread the news about DBD.
