You deserve better than struggling with dentures
If you're an older adult considering dental implants, you probably have questions. Can I still get implants at my age? What about my medications? Is the surgery safe? Will my bone be strong enough?
These are sensible questions, and we hear them every day from patients in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. The short answer is that age alone does not prevent you from getting dental implants. What matters is your overall health, not the year you were born. Even conditions like diabetes are manageable with proper protocols.
Many of our senior patients tell us the same thing: they wish they'd done it sooner. After years of denture adhesives, food restrictions, and feeling self-conscious, implants gave them back something they'd forgotten they were missing.
Addressing the Concerns You Actually Have
We hear these from patients every week. Here are the honest answers.
"I'm worried the surgery is too much at my age"
This is the number one concern for older patients. The idea of oral surgery can feel daunting, especially if you haven't had a procedure in years.
Implant surgery is gentler than most people expect. Many patients say it was easier than having a tooth extracted. The procedure uses local anaesthesia (the same as a filling), and IV sedation is available if you'd prefer to feel drowsy throughout. Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two.
"I take blood thinners and other medications"
Many seniors take warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or other blood-thinning medications. There's a common belief that these rule out implant surgery.
Blood thinners rarely prevent treatment. In most cases, we work with your GP to manage your medication around the procedure. Some medications may be temporarily adjusted, while others can continue as normal. We review your complete medical history before recommending any treatment.
"I've been told I have bone loss from my dentures"
Years of wearing dentures accelerate jawbone shrinkage. Some patients have been told by other dentists that they don't have enough bone for implants.
Bone loss doesn't automatically rule you out. Techniques like All-on-4 are specifically designed for patients with reduced bone. Angled implants maximise contact with available bone, and most patients qualify without needing separate grafting procedures. See our full bone loss guide.
"I have osteoporosis. Can I still get implants?"
Osteoporosis affects bone density throughout the body, and patients understandably worry this includes the jaw.
Osteoporosis does not prevent implant treatment in most cases. Jaw bone density is different from hip or spine density. Research shows that implant success rates in patients with osteoporosis are only slightly lower than average. The main consideration is if you take bisphosphonate medications, which require careful assessment. Smoking is a more significant risk factor than osteoporosis for most patients.
"I'm worried about the healing time at my age"
It's true that healing can take slightly longer as we age. Some patients worry that their body won't integrate the implants properly.
Healing may be marginally slower, but success rates remain excellent. Research shows 95-97% success rates for patients over 70. We factor in slightly longer healing times when planning your treatment. With our Vivo Bridge option, you can still receive permanent teeth within 48 hours, even as a senior patient.

Patients with dental implants consume 20% more protein and fibre than denture wearers
For seniors, this matters more than comfort alone. Adequate protein intake reduces muscle loss, supports immune function, and helps prevent falls. Being able to eat properly isn't a luxury. It directly affects health outcomes in later life.

What Matters Most to Our Senior Patients
Eating properly
Steak, apples, crusty bread, nuts. Foods that denture wearers avoid but that are important for maintaining strength and health in later years. Implants restore the ability to eat anything.
Social confidence
No more worrying about dentures slipping during a conversation or avoiding meals with family and friends. Implants stay put. You stop thinking about your teeth and start living.
Independence
No adhesive pastes, no soaking teeth overnight, no special cleaning routines. Implants are brushed and flossed like natural teeth. Simpler daily care means more independence.
Facial structure
Bone loss from missing teeth or dentures causes the jaw to shrink, leading to a sunken appearance. Implants stimulate the bone and help maintain your natural facial shape.
What Treatment Looks Like for Senior Patients
We tailor the process to your comfort and health needs
Full health assessment
We review your medical history, current medications, and any health conditions. A 3D CBCT scan assesses your bone density. If needed, we coordinate with your GP to ensure everything is safe before proceeding.
Personalised treatment plan
Your plan accounts for your specific health profile, including any medication adjustments, healing timeline, and the best implant approach for your bone levels. We discuss every detail so there are no surprises.
Implant placement
Implants are placed under local anaesthesia or sedation. The procedure is minimally invasive, and most senior patients describe it as much easier than expected. You'll have teeth to eat with the same day.
Gentle healing period
We allow slightly longer healing times for older patients so the bone fuses properly. You'll have functional teeth throughout this period. Regular check-ins monitor your progress.
Final teeth fitted
Your permanent teeth are placed and adjusted. With Vivo Bridge, this can happen within 48 hours of surgery. You leave with a complete, confident smile.
Total estimated treatment time: Typically 3-5 months from consultation to final teeth, or 48 hours with Vivo Bridge

Dental Implants for Seniors: Your Questions Answered
Is there an age limit for dental implants?
There is no upper age limit for dental implants. We have successfully treated patients in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s. What matters is your overall health and bone density, not the number on your birthday. A free consultation with a 3D scan will confirm whether implants are right for you.
Can pensioners get dental implants on the NHS?
NHS dental implant coverage is extremely limited regardless of age. Pensioners may qualify for help with NHS dental charges through the NHS Low Income Scheme (HC2 certificate), but this covers standard treatments like dentures, not implants. For most patients, private treatment with finance options is the most accessible route. See our NHS funding guide for details.
Are dental implants safe for people over 70?
Yes. Research published in the British Dental Journal shows that implant success rates for patients over 70 are comparable to younger patients (95-97%). The procedure is typically done under local anaesthesia, which is very safe for older adults. Sedation is also available for patients who feel nervous.
Will my medications affect dental implant treatment?
Many common medications are compatible with implant treatment. Blood thinners may need temporary adjustment (with your GP's guidance). Bisphosphonates for osteoporosis require careful assessment but don't automatically rule out implants. We review your full medical history and coordinate with your GP when needed.
How long do dental implants last in older patients?
Implants can last the rest of your life with proper care. A 70-year-old receiving implants today can expect them to function perfectly for 20+ years. The implant itself rarely fails. The crown on top may need replacing after 15-20 years, but the foundation stays solid.
What if I've had dentures for years and have bone loss?
Long-term denture use does cause bone loss, but modern techniques work around this. All-on-4 uses angled implants to maximise available bone. Even patients with significant bone loss can often receive implants without grafting. See our implants vs dentures comparison for the full picture.
