Bone loss doesn't have to mean 'no'
If you've lost jawbone density from missing teeth, gum disease, or years of wearing dentures, you may have been told implants aren't an option. That advice may have been correct at the time, but techniques have moved on significantly.
Today, most patients with bone loss can still receive implants. The approach depends on the severity: mild loss may need no special treatment at all, moderate loss can often be managed with angled implants, and even severe loss has solutions including bone grafting and zygomatic implants.
A 3D CBCT scan gives us a precise picture of your bone levels and lets us recommend the best approach for your situation.
Understanding Bone Loss and Implants
"I was told I don't have enough bone"
This is the most common reason patients are turned away from implant treatment. Some clinics only offer standard-length implants that require a minimum bone depth.
Get a second opinion with a 3D scan. Our surgeons specialise in cases other clinics decline. All-on-4 uses angled implants to maximise available bone. Short implants, mini implants, and zygomatic implants bypass areas of severe loss entirely. The scan gives us a definitive answer.
"My bone loss is from wearing dentures for years"
Dentures sit on top of the gum and don't stimulate the underlying bone. Over time, the jaw shrinks progressively, which is why dentures get looser over the years.
This is one of the most common situations we treat. Denture-related bone loss follows predictable patterns, and techniques like All-on-4 are designed specifically for this scenario. Many long-term denture wearers are excellent candidates. See our dentures vs implants guide.
"I don't want bone grafting surgery"
The idea of harvesting bone from elsewhere in the body and transplanting it to the jaw sounds like a major procedure. Many patients find this off-putting.
Grafting has evolved significantly. Most grafts now use synthetic or donor material, not bone from your own body. Minor grafts can be done at the same time as implant placement with no extra recovery time. And with All-on-4, many patients skip grafting altogether.
"I'm worried about how quickly I'm losing bone"
Bone loss accelerates over time once teeth are missing. Patients who have been without teeth for years often feel the urgency to act before more bone disappears.
Acting sooner is always better. Implants actually reverse the trend by stimulating the bone and preventing further loss. The longer you wait, the more complex treatment may become. A consultation now gives you a clear picture of your current options.

Without tooth roots (or implants) to stimulate it, jawbone resorbs steadily. After 10 years, up to 60% of bone volume can be lost. Implants are the only tooth replacement option that preserves and stimulates bone growth.

Treatment Paths for Bone Loss Patients
Your pathway depends on your bone levels
Free 3D CBCT scan
A 3D scan gives us a precise, millimetre-accurate picture of your bone density throughout the jaw. This is the single most important step in determining your treatment options.
Treatment plan tailored to your bone
Based on your scan, we recommend the best approach: standard implants, All-on-4, bone grafting, or a combination. You'll receive a clear plan with exact costs and timeline.
Bone grafting (if needed)
If grafting is required, synthetic or donor bone material is placed where needed. Minor grafts can be done alongside implant placement. Major grafts need a healing period before implants.
Implant placement
Implants are placed using the approach best suited to your bone levels. With Vivo Bridge, permanent teeth can be fitted within 48 hours, even for bone loss patients using All-on-4.
Final teeth and ongoing care
Your permanent teeth are fitted and your implants begin stimulating bone growth, preventing further loss. Regular check-ups maintain long-term health.

Bone Loss and Implants: Your Questions Answered
Can you get dental implants with severe bone loss?
Yes. Modern techniques like All-on-4 are specifically designed for patients with bone loss. Angled implants maximise contact with available bone. Even patients who have been told 'no' elsewhere often qualify with us.
What causes jawbone loss?
The most common causes are tooth loss (bone shrinks without tooth roots to stimulate it), long-term denture use, gum disease, and natural ageing. The longer teeth are missing, the more bone is lost. Older adults are particularly affected.
Do I need bone grafting before dental implants?
Not always. All-on-4 techniques use angled implants to bypass areas of bone loss, often eliminating the need for grafting. When grafting is needed, it can sometimes be done at the same time as implant placement. A 3D scan tells us exactly what's needed.
How long does bone grafting take to heal?
Bone grafts typically need 3-6 months to heal before implants can be placed. Minor grafts done alongside implant placement don't add extra healing time. Your treatment plan will include a clear timeline based on your specific situation.
Is bone grafting painful?
Bone grafting is done under local anaesthesia and is no more uncomfortable than a tooth extraction. Sedation is available for nervous patients. Most patients manage post-operative discomfort with over-the-counter painkillers for a few days.
How much do implants cost with bone loss?
Implant costs are the same regardless of bone loss. Full arch from £6,995 with All-on-4. If bone grafting is needed separately, it adds £800-£2,000 depending on the extent. 0% finance available. See our payment options.
