The real difference between an implant and a bridge

If your dentist has told you that you need to replace a missing tooth, you've probably been given two options: a dental bridge or a dental implant.

On the surface they solve the same problem. But the way they work is completely different, and that difference matters for your long-term health, comfort, and cost.

A bridge hooks onto the teeth on either side of the gap. To do that, those healthy teeth need to be filed down permanently. An implant, on the other hand, stands on its own. A titanium post goes into the jawbone and acts as an artificial root. Nothing else gets touched.

This guide covers cost, longevity, procedure, and the situations where each option genuinely makes more sense. If you're also considering dentures, see our separate implants vs dentures comparison.

A bridge requires grinding down two healthy teeth. An implant stands on its own.

This is the single biggest clinical difference. Once healthy tooth structure is removed for a bridge, it's gone forever. Those teeth become more vulnerable to decay and fracture over time.

How the Two Procedures Compare

What to expect from each option, step by step

Dental Bridge
1

Tooth preparation

Visit 1

The teeth on either side of the gap are filed down under local anaesthesia. Impressions are taken and sent to a lab. A temporary bridge is fitted.

2

Waiting for the lab

2-3 weeks

Your permanent bridge is manufactured in a dental lab. You wear a temporary bridge during this time.

3

Final fitting

Visit 2

The permanent bridge is cemented onto the prepared teeth. Treatment is complete.

Dental Implant
1

Implant placement

Visit 1

A titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthesia. For front teeth, a temporary crown is fitted the same day.

2

Healing (osseointegration)

8-12 weeks

The implant fuses with your jawbone. You can eat and function normally. No adjacent teeth are affected.

3

Permanent crown

Final visit

A custom crown is attached. It looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. With Vivo Bridge, full arch cases get permanent teeth in 48 hours.

When Is a Bridge the Better Choice?

The teeth either side already need crowns

If the neighbouring teeth are heavily filled, cracked, or already have crowns, a bridge makes clinical sense because those teeth need covering regardless.

Your dentist will assess whether the adjacent teeth are healthy or already compromised. If they need work anyway, a bridge can be a smart two-in-one solution.

You can't have surgery for medical reasons

Some medical conditions or medications (like certain blood thinners or bisphosphonates) make implant surgery inadvisable. A bridge requires no surgery at all.

We assess every patient individually. Many conditions that people think rule out implants actually don't. A consultation will give you a clear answer.

You need a solution quickly

A bridge can be completed in 2-3 weeks. Traditional implants take several months from start to finish due to healing time.

If speed is the priority, a bridge is faster. That said, if you're suitable for Vivo Bridge, we can deliver permanent implant-supported teeth in 48 hours.

Cost is the main concern right now

A bridge costs less upfront (£800-£1,500 vs £1,695+ for an implant). If your budget is tight right now, a bridge gets you a functional replacement sooner.

Consider the long-term picture: bridges need replacing every 10-15 years. Over 20 years, an implant often works out cheaper. We offer 0% finance from £28/month to spread the cost. Wondering about NHS funding? Most patients don't qualify, but affordable private options exist.

Implants vs Bridge: Common Questions

How long does a dental bridge last compared to an implant?

A dental bridge typically lasts 10-15 years before needing replacement. The supporting teeth underneath can develop problems sooner. Dental implants, by contrast, can last 25 years or more. The implant itself often lasts a lifetime with proper care, though the crown on top may need replacing after 15-20 years.

Is a dental implant more painful than a bridge?

Most patients report that implant placement is less uncomfortable than expected. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, and many patients say it was easier than having a tooth extracted. A bridge requires no surgery, but it does require grinding down two healthy teeth, which can cause sensitivity. Both procedures have manageable recovery.

Why are dental implants more expensive than bridges?

The upfront cost of an implant is higher because it involves a titanium post surgically placed in your jawbone, plus a custom crown. A bridge costs less initially but needs replacing every 10-15 years. Over 20 years, a bridge often costs more when you factor in replacements and maintenance. At Dental by Design, single implants start from £1,695 with 0% finance available.

Can I get an implant if I already have a bridge?

Yes. Many of our patients come to us after a bridge has failed or they've grown tired of the maintenance. The bridge is removed, and we assess whether the supporting teeth and bone are suitable for implant placement. In most cases, we can place an implant where the bridge was.

Do dental bridges damage the teeth on either side?

A traditional bridge requires filing down the two teeth on either side of the gap to create anchors. This removes healthy tooth structure permanently. Those teeth are then more vulnerable to decay and fracture long-term. This is one of the main clinical reasons dentists increasingly recommend implants over bridges when the patient is a good candidate.

When is a bridge actually the better option?

A bridge can be the right choice if the teeth on either side of the gap already need crowns due to damage or large fillings. It's also suitable for patients who can't have surgery for medical reasons, or who need a faster solution (bridges take about 2-3 weeks vs several months for traditional implants). Your dentist will recommend the best option for your specific situation.

Having priced up the same implants on the South Coast I found Dental by Design a lot cheaper . I had my whole top jaw teeth replaced by Dr. Mechoui having been worried by the process I found him and the surgery excellent at making me feel relaxed and informed at all stages. The finished result has exceeded my expectations and I would thoroughly recommend Dental by design to anybody who is thinking about the process. Ps they don’t look anything like’Turkey’ teeth, very natural looking and feeling.

I visited plenty of dental practice before I came to see DBD. They all gave me the sweet talk and complications in having it done. I felt like, with all the complications, it’s not worth going through it. For every complications, there’s a corresponding charge. With DBD, everything was straight forward. On my free assessment, Dr Rob gave me lots of encouragement and reassurance. On the day of my procedure, nurse Elisa and Dr Rob made me feel at home and the feeling of outmost care. The receptionist were all very nice and they new my name as I entered the door. Isabella was so caring even with the aftercare calls. Overall, my experience with them has been well worth it in terms of affordability, skills, quality of care and the friendly and clean atmosphere. I will definitely spread the news about DBD.
